‘Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance,’ From LONG DISTANCE MAN, a Tribute to Rusty Wier, Blakeman’s Hero and Inspiration.

Austin, TX — Shy Blakeman, the Country/blues/Southern rock artist currently touring the Lone Star state behind his latest album, LONG DISTANCE MAN (Winding Road Music, March 2010), describes the second single released to radio, legendary Austin singer-songwriter Rusty Wier’s “Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance,” as a heartfelt tribute to the Cosmic Cowboy.

Says Blakeman: “I had never heard a song so completely capture my hopes and dreams like that before. That song had such an impact on me it became the anthem for my life and Rusty the inspiration for my craft.”

Blakeman, who spent Memorial Day Weekend in Nashville, where he opened the Rockin’ Through the Rain Music Festival benefit for flood victims, and is spending July criss-crossing Texas, credits Wier with some of the moves he uses onstage and the gentle blurring of genre lines in his own songwriting.

“But the best lesson I ever received from Rusty,” says Blakeman, “was his true talent. Rusty knew how to connect with his fans. Onstage he would immerse you in his universe of poetic verse and melody. You didn’t just believe the stories Rusty Wier sang, you felt every word.

“Offstage he took the time to get to know every fan,” he continues. “Because in his wisdom he knew what many of us lose as young artists, what’s really important about what we do: We touch people. He touched people; he changed my life.”

Blakeman — whose passion for entertaining translates into every one of his performances and whose LONG DISTANCE MAN cements what’s become his trademark: a great lyric sung with heart and soul — has garnered a fan base with chart-climbing hits from his previous albums. “… The new album [is] one absolute winner, each song a hit,” says MyJoog.com. “There’s too much to write in one setting about this CD. Just go out and get it.”

The Texas tour includes shows at:
July 14, Overtime Sports Bar & Grill, Burleson
July 15, Fat Daddy’s, Waxahachie
July 16, Lakeside Icehouse, Bryan
July 17, Scooter’s Dancehall, Moulton
July 24, Rattlesnake Junction, Waco
July 25, The Railhead BBQ, Aledo
July 28, The Levee, Longview
July 29, Poor David’s Pub, Dallas
July 30, The White Elephant Saloon, Fort Worth

“In the grand scheme,” Blakeman concludes, “I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Wier only a short time. But I cherish every second … I don’t know if Rusty ever knew how closely I watched him as a performer, how much I listened to him as a songwriter or how much I modeled myself after him as an artist. … That’s how I pay homage. That’s how I humbly try to keep the legend that is Rusty Wier alive.”

If Waylon Jennings had not already sired a son who seems to be following in his (mother, Jessi Colter’s and) late dad’s footsteps,   he might have claimed Shy Blakeman.

While the Texas singer-songwriter also claims The Black Crowes and Ray Charles as his musical influences, Waylon’s specter even extends to Blakeman’s choice of producers:, Ted Russell Kamp (whose credits include, yes, Shooter Jennings).

Shy’s opener, The Kamp-penned title song is a bit of bravado Waylon might easily have recorded as is the track that follows, So Many Honky Tonks.

But with musicians such as Marc Ford and Audley Freed lending credence to Blakeman’s Crowes’ connection and other all-star musicians  (Doug Pettibone, Kenny Vaughn, Jason Sutter, Don Dziubla and Gia Ciambotti contributing their time and talent,  this is hardly a Waylon Jennings tribute album.

Not that remakes are totally absent.  Shy shines on his reprise of the Rusty Wier hit,  Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance.

Then again, Quarter to Three is not a remake of the Gary “U.S.” Bonds classic but rather a brassy, ballsy, bluesy self-indulgent slightly gospel-infused rocker written by the Warren Brothers and Rob Stoney.

Likewise, Living Proof is not the cover of a Hank Williams, Jr. hit and listener won’t be thinking of Jeanne Pruett as Blakeman goes full-throttle on Willis Alan Ramsey’s daydream of sorts, Satin Sheets (Rest assured, John Volinkaty’s heirs will NOT be suing for copyright infringement).

Those who like their music rollicking, rockin’, raucus and sometimes with a touch of the blues, will find that Long Distance Man does not disappoint.  For Shy Blakeman is anything but- well, shy!

I just wanted to share the write up I received in Nashville Lifestyles Magazine’s “Now hear this” section. It’s short but oooooooooh so sweet:)

“Shy Blakeman

Long Distance Man:

We first saw him in 2006 on Nashville Star. Now the colorful Texan has released his third album, full of bluesy tunes like” Swamp Water Whiskey” and wild delights like “So Many Honky Tonks”. He’ll be performing at CMA Fest on June 10th———- But you’ll want a listen well before then.”

Awesome!

AMERICANA COUNTRY ROCKER SHY BLAKEMAN

TOURING TEXAS IN JULY

Shy Blakeman, the Texas Country/Southern rock artist whose passion for entertaining translates into every one of his performances, will spend July criss-crossing the Lone Star state to share his latest album, LONG DISTANCE MAN (Winding Road Music, March 2010), and more with fans and new listeners.

He spent Memorial Day Weekend in Nashville, where he opened the Rockin’ Through the Rain Music Festival, a benefit for victims of the catastrophic Cumberland River flood.

Blakeman, who was a finalist on Season 4 of NBC/USA Network’s “Nashville Star,” has garnered a fan base with chart-climbing hits from his previous albums. This disk, recorded at Hollywood Sound with Warren Izard as executive producer, cements what’s become his trademark: a great lyric sung with heart and soul.

“… The new album [is] one absolute winner, each song a hit,” says MyJoog.com. “Blakeman reflects the outlaw sound made famous by Waylon Jennings and Billy Joe Shaver: country and rootsy, with some outside influences from blues, jazz and classic Southern rock. … It helps that Blakeman recruited an all-star cast of supporting players; but he also arranged the songs to make each entertaining. … There’s too much to write in one setting about this CD. Just go out and get it.”

Roughstock.com gave it four stars, saying “LONG DISTANCE MAN is a bracing, intriguing blend of alternative country, blues and a little bit of rock. … There’s plenty of spice and substance to Blakeman’s album.”

It was coming close to dying after an armed robbery in Dallas that crystallized Blakeman’s decision to charge ahead toward his dream of making music. He’s living the dream and living it well.

The Texas tour includes shows at:

July 10, River City Grille, Marble Falls

July 15, Fat Daddy’s, Waxahachie

July 16, Lakeside Icehouse, Bryan

July 17, Scooter’s Dancehall, Moulton

July 23, Chap’s, Kemp

July 24, Rattlesnake Junction, Waco

July 28, The Levee, Longview

July 29, Poor David’s Pub, Dallas

July 30, The White Elephant Saloon, Fort Worth

While many artists make their way to Texas so they can make the music they truly want to make in the way they have always wished to, there are certain artists who actually need to get out of the state for a bit so they can the album of their dreams.

Country-rocker Shy Blakeman is one of those travelin’ souls. Growing up in Kilgore and hitting just about every honky-tonk in Texas, Blakeman showed signs of excellence well before the release of his latest (and fantastic) album, Long Distance Man. After flirting with the ”big-time” after his short stint on a past season of the reality show, Nashville Star, Blakeman realized that Texas might not be the only place around for him to make his music happen.

Full of southern rock, soul and boot stomping country, this album was recorded in Hollywood, of all places. Singer/Songwriter Ted Russell Kamp, who happens to also be the bass player for Shooter Jennings, produced the record while Blakeman enjoyed the fine studio help of Doug Pettibone (who plays guitar with Lucinda Williams) and Marc Ford (who has played with the Black Crowes and more recently, Ryan Bingham). With a serious wealth of talent such as that, its not a shock that the final product turned out to be as sweet as it is.

The disc itself is a rather mixed bag of sounds. that’s not to say that the results are mixed, however. Touches of Celtic and gospel make themselves known quite admirably as well.

While it would be easy to determine that Blakeman still holds Texas near and dear to his heart from listening to the record and the fact that he still tours so much here in Texas, the point is hammered home when Blakeman pays tribute to one of our state’s greatest musical heroes, the Cosmic Cowboy himself, the late and great Rusty Weir. Blakeman’s take on “Don’t It Make You Want to Dance” is as jubilant and identifiable as the darn-near sacred original is.

While the sonic is diverse, as is the geography of the album’s progression, the overall spirit is solidly country, Texas country to be more specific, even.

IDOL ALUM BO BICE TO HEADLINE DAY LONG RELIEF CONCERT

Rockin’ Through The Rain Music Festival scheduled for this Sunday, May 30

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee experienced record breaking rain storms earlier this month, leaving 23,000 homes and major attractions under water. The Cumberland River crested at its highest level in over 80 years. Nashville had its highest rainfall totals since records began. People drown, billions of dollars in damage occurred. It’s the single largest disaster to hit Middle Tennessee since the Civil War.

In a time of need, it is common for those in the music community to step up and assist those who need help. 50% of the proceeds from the 39th annual CMA Music Festival, scheduled in a few weeks will benefit the flood victims. Star-studded telethons have already brought in millions of dollars with the help of Nicole Kidman, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Keith Urban and others.

Singer/Songwriter Stephen Salyers, alongside of a volunteer committee and more than 30 musicians will all take part in the Rockin’ Through The Rain Music Festival at Limelight. American Idol alum Bo Bice (also a Nashville resident) will headline the day long event which will include a Silent Auction full of country music memorabilia (included a autographed guitar signed by several country music stars), hockey stick autographed by the Nashville Predators among items from local Nashville businesses. Storme Warren of GAC will emcee the event which will include musical performanes by songwriters/artists such as Richard Fagan, Vinny Van-Zant (Trailor Choir), Adam Gregory, Everlife, The Carter Twins, Shy Blakeman, Leigh Houison and Bice. Doors for the event will open at 11am, music begins at noon.

The music will last until eleven o’clock in the evening. Admission is $10 at the door. All proceeds will benefit Hands On Nashville. Hands On Nashville is a recognized leader in programs that refers or places over 38,000 volunteers to projects in more than 300 area service agencies and schools. Rockin’ Through The Rain Music Festival is being presented by the Billy Ray Cyrus Charities Foundation.

Hey folks,

Sorry for the long delay in communication but our internet was down due to the flooding here in Nashville.  The good news is that the city has survived a major catastrophe and we are coming together to help rebuild the city we love. When I have time I will most likely set down and write my thoughts about what happened and the destruction caused. No better way to get your feelings out than by putting them down on paper. Now, for some more great news! Thanks to all my fans and friends “Long Distance Man” won the Austin Music City Voter’s Poll for April! By a land slide margin! You guys are so awesome. Thanks so much for coming out and showing your support. Here is what AustinMusicCtiy.com had to say about the album:

The hands down winner of the April voter’s poll was a fine example of what happens when an artist truly connects to his fans and they overwhelmingly, unabashedly and undeniably connect with him. Politicians would kill to have fan clubs like this one and anytime there is a turnout like this it’s usually a good sign of one thing, talent.

After listening to this cd it becomes obvious very quickly that you’re not just “listening” to it, you’re actually being taken on an audio carnival ride that involves about 7 musical styles and a cross section of genres mixed in with a big dose of virtuosity from the musicians involved on the album. Great stuff. Though a young man in age, Blakeman has the ability of an old bluesman to live in a song and pull out everything there is to say and not just gloss over the words, there’s nothing to prove to anybody so why not nail it to the wall and give it all he has.

Though Blakeman has bounced around the country from California to Nashville, it’s Texas that has had the most influence on his musical life. Blakeman states, “It’s where I’ve lived longer than anywhere in my life, and I’m glad I lived in Texas in my most impressionable years when I was coming of age. What makes Texas music great is that it’s organic, it’s real, it’s just what it is. Texas was the launching pad for me, and what has allowed me to do this.”

There are several songs on the album I liked, “So Many Honky Tonks”, “Dragonfly”, “Quarter To Three”, “Old Folks Blues” to name a few but there was one in particular that really caught my attention. For many years I used to go to the Saxon Pub in Austin on Thursday nights and listen to Rusty Weir and I can’t tell you how many times I heard him sing “Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance”, probably a thousand and that song has been covered by nearly everybody in the music business but in listening to Blakeman sing it I got that same energy and soul that Rusty always put into it and it was uncanny, eerie in a way, but in a good way. Anytime you can get that close to what the original singer intended then you’ve done something.

For more information on Shy Blakeman, go to

www.shyblakeman.com and keep your eye on this guy, he’s a serious contender.

Read the review at www.austinmusiccity.com

PS: We are confirming dates in Texas for July. I will let you know when and where as soon as we have the details!

I wanted to inform everybody that there is only a few days lerft to vote for “Long Distance Man” at the Austin Music City Voter’s Poll Thank to all my fans and friends I’m winning. But I guarantee the guy in second place is rallying his fans as we speak. So please take 2 seconds and vote for me. I appreciate all your love and support SO much!

Thanks again,
Shy

PS: This new iPhone app rocks!

Shy Blakeman was already a recording artist well before he gained his 15 minutes of fame as the ninth-place finalist on season 4 of Nashville Star. Although he wasn’t snapped up by a major label like first-placer Chris Young was, Blakeman has made a name for himself on the Texas music charts with “Long Distance Man,” the first release and first cut from his album of the same name. The album was produced by Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings), and while a bit mellower overall than Shooter’s work (some of the mellowness being from Blakeman’s voice), Long Distance Man is a bracing, intriguing blend of alternative country, blues and a little bit of rock. “Long Distance Man” starts off with some fuzzy guitar work backed with some horns, making for a tasty little blues-funk concoction well-suited to Blakeman’s voice. As infectious as it is, you might not even realize that it only has six lines’ worth of lyric. But hey, it uses them very well. “Easy Goin’ Woman” continues in the man-who-wants-to-travel theme, and just as its title indicates, it’s an easy-goin’ song. The horns add a little more muscle to “Old Folks Blues,” which asks the question, “Is it a crime to have a good ol’ time?” No, it’s not, definitely not if it sounds as fun as that song. Guitar and keyboard push to the forefront on the bracing honky-tonk of “So Many Honky Tonks” (…”and so little time;” what a hook!) and the Lee Roy Parnell-esque “Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance.” Yes, Shy, it does. He surely stays out there at the honky-tonk for a long time; at “A Quarter to Three,” there “ain’t nobody bigger than” him. And of course, once he’s done overnighting at the honky-tonk, “Late Night Early Morning” explores the morning after in a similarly familiar yet tuneful way. (And as if you haven’t had enough evidence yet, he does give praise to the whiskey and the wine — and the Man Upstairs™ — in “Livin’ Proof.”) Continuing in the religious theme is the bouncy gospel-esque “Satin Sheets,” even if the lyrics are just a bit… well, weird (“praise the Lord and pass the mescaline,” followed by something about ceiling lights, playing rock music, growing long hair, and oh yeah, satin sheets. Jeanne Pruett this ain’t.) “Dragon Fly” [sic] uses inspired insect metaphors, comparing the narrator to a dragonfly who’s gonna see his “butterfly babe” at the catfish pond. The chorus is a bit of a copuout with its “doo doo doos,” but not unlike “All I Want to Do,” it manages to lodge itself rather firmly in your ear. The bouncy “Swamp Water Whiskey” is similarly backwoods-y in its lyric, keeping up the blues-y feel built up so far and filtering it through Southern rock and sounding like a prime cut from an early Kentucky Headhunters album. “Cannon Ball” shares a similar acoustic approach to “Dragon Fly” and a similarly broken-up compound word for its title. Although the first verse stumbles over mixed metaphor after mixed metaphor, the second and third offer interesting vignettes of lonelineness and death, but ultimately, the hook seems greatly disconnected from the rest of the song and thus undermines any power that the rest of the song had. The album finishes off with the mostly acoustic “Save a Little Room,” its jangly, almost Celtic melody at odds with its lyrics about being so loud and rowdy, but when it gets to the chorus, the song’s true message comes to light: “Save a little room in your heart / And I’ll save some room for you.” Of course, “Still hung over from Vegas, and that was two weeks ago” is a gem in its own right. Texas country is quite the unusual blend overall, taking a little bit of everything and mixing it all together into a big bowl of Texas chili. And of course, no two people make chili exactly the same way (I still have yet to find a recipe that tops my mom’s), so no two Texas artists are exactly alike. Shy Blakeman sounds a little more energetic on some tracks than on others, but at the same time, there’s plenty of spice and substance to Blakeman’s album.

Within the horde of CDs we received last month there was one absolute winner, each song a hit. The artist is Shy Blakeman and the CD, Long Distance Man. Blakeman isnew to us, but probably not for people who frequent Texas honky tonks or even regular viewers of “Nashville Star”. He participated in 2006. But to us, Blakeman reflects the outlaw sound made famous by Waylon Jennings and Billy Joe Shaver: country and rootsy – with some outside influences from blues, jazz, and classic southern rock. And more importantly we enjoyed every single song on the CD. Completely enjoyed them; and obviously this is one of our favorite CDs of the year. It helps that Blakeman recruited an all star cast of supporting players; but he also arranged the songs to make each entertaining. The title track blends a mix of sounds including gospel-flavored backing vocals, horns, rockin’ guitar, and a Hammond B-3 organ. Some songs contain swampy Louisiana blues, others southern rock ala Lynyrd Skynyrd, Late Night Early Morning is completely The Band, and Save a Little Room – a Celtic folk tale. Nice diversity. He also does a great job with Rusty Weir’s Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance and slows down with Cannon Ball – one of our favorites. There’s to much to write in one setting about this CD, just go out and get it.

Hey Folks,
Austin Music City.com was good enough to put the new single “Long Distance Man” on their voters poll for the month of April. Show your support and go to http://www.austinmusiccity.com/poll and vote for LDM. The track that recieves the most votes will get a front page review on the website. Thanks again for all your support!

It’s been a great 2 weeks on the road promoting my new album! SXSW was awesome and I had a great time visiting all the radio stations. I caught the Flu last Tuesday and had to postpone some of the radio visits but I am back on my feet and making them up today. I have 1 more stop at 95.3fm The Ranch in FT. Worth, TX. Then to a screening of the Larry Joe’s Festival DVD tonight. After that my adventure in Texas is over until next month. It’s been so great to get back here and see all my old friends and make some new ones. I really missed Texas, more than I thought I did I guess. But you never REALLY realize how much you miss home until you make it back. I’m just happy my visits are going to be more frequent now. The ”LDM” hit the shelves 2 weeks ago and the the single is slowly but surely breaking its way into the chart. So remember to go out and buy a copy and keep requesting ”LDM” on your favorite radio stations! Much love and thanks for all your support. It really means the world to me!

So far the radio tour has gone awesome. I had the chance to stop by and say hello to all the stations in Brenham/Bryan/College Station.
But I have 5 more days to go! If you would like to join me on my road trip through Texas and get all the updates on what stations I’m at and where you can listen to the interviews, follow or friend request me at:

Day 2 here we go!

Shy

I had such a great week. This was my first SXSW ever. I got to hang and reconnect with a ton of amazing people like Penny Lazo, the crew from Winding Road Music, Jennifer from Kinetic Entertainment, Heidi and Jill from McGuckin Entertainment PR, Bart Crowe, Mark McKinney, Ryan Beavers, Brandon Rhyder, Fred Andrews, Dakota Lovett, my girl Baker, the newest “Howur” addition Christina Hardaway, Audley Freed, Jim Lauderdale, Tres Womack and Texas Renegade. They made it quite an experience. My showcases went awesome and so did my television appearance! The bands were crazy good too! I would definitely make a point to check out The Courtyard Hounds and Neon Trees! Today is my last day in Austin. I’m hitting the Texas Music Magazine party and then off to Gruene, TX for a day for a little rest and relaxation before I start my radio tour next week, which kicks off in Brenham/Bryan/College Station. This has been a great trip so far and I’m looking forward to hitting the pavement next week! Make sure you guys keep calling and requesting “Long Distance Man” on your local radio station and pick up the album which is in stores now! See you down the road soon!

SHY BLAKEMAN REACHES HIS FINAL DESTINATION
WITH THE RELEASE OF A NEW ALBUM TODAY

Introducing a New Blend of Country on LONG DISTANCE MAN

Austin, TX — Shy Blakeman, the Texas singer-songwriter with a colorful past and engaging character who was first introduced to audiences during th…e 2006 season of “Nashville Star,” is scheduled to release his third album LONG DISTANCE MAN today.

Influenced by the eclectic southern mixture representative of The Black Crowes, Waylon Jennings and Ray Charles, Blakeman succeeds in his efforts to break ground on a new sound by melding genres into an album that is equally pleasurable and viably commercial. This new venture allows the listener to go along for a ride with the “Long Distance Man” as he musically meanders through songs that cross the plains of Texas country at “Quarter to Three,” hears the blues and tastes the “Swamp Water Whisky” of Baton Rouge, dances all night in a few of the “So Many Honky Tonks” that decorate the true country landscape, and establishes roots at the Americana homestead that is “Dragon Fly.”

Produced by Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings) and Executively Produced by Warren Izard, the album also features a bevy of world class players who have graciously lent their time and talent to support the new project. Artists of note include Marc Ford (The Black Crowes), Audley Freed (The Black Crowes, Cry Love, Peter Frampton), Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams, Jewel), Kenny Vaughn (Steve Earle, Marty Stuart, Rodney Crowell), Michael Webb (John Fogerty), Jason Sutter (Chris Cornell), Ron Dziubla (Royal Crown Reveue, Ricky Martin), and Gia Ciambotti (Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt).

The rollicking title track was released to radio on February 23, 2010 and early commendations for the album are already rolling in. “I’ve been drowning in a sea of cookie-cutter music. Thank you Shy Blakeman for throwing me a life preserver [with] LONG DISTANCE MAN,” says Kelley Peterson of KHKX/KMCM/KQRX in Odessa, Texas.

Blakeman will be promoting his new album today during a performance at the Kinetic Entertainment “The Early Bird Gets The Music” showcase at Annie’s West, 706 W. 6th St. Austin, Texas. He has also been invited to perform for the CMT Awards after-party in Nashville, Tenn. Scheduled for June 9, 2010, this unofficial wrap-up to the CMA Music Fest activities will be hosted by Cowboy Troy, the 2006 and 2007 co-host of “Nashville Star.”

Buy/order the album at any Best Buy or Hastings! You can also download it on iTunes or any major download retailer!
